New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Thursday asked the Centre, the States and the Union Territories to work out the modalities in six months for the implementation of the Centre’s decision to make it mandatory for all vehicles to have high security registration plates.

A Bench of Justice Arijit Pasayat, Justice C.K. Thakker and Justice L.S. Panta gave this direction on a petition filed by Maninderjit Singh Bitta seeking timely implementation of the government’s 2001 decision. The Bench agreed with the contentions of the petitioner and directed implementation of the scheme in six months.

The petitioner had submitted that the underlying object of the high security registration plates was to curb the increasing menace of car thefts and their use in commission of crimes like rape, murder, dacoity, kidnapping, etc., and the system was devised to ensure public safety.
