Absence of programme led to defeat: AIFB

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) on Tuesday said confusion about the stability, credibility and programme of the Third Front led to the Congress retaining power. While justifying the move to form an alternative formation, it said the Left and other parties failed to give any proper structure for the combination.

“The [Third] Front partners also failed to provide an alternative national programme of governance. The leaders of the Front also did not make any nation-wide joint campaign. All these created confusion among the people about viability of the Front,” AIFB general secretary Debabrata Biswas said in a press communiqué at the end of its two-day Central Secretariat meeting here on Tuesday.

The party said campaign by both the Congress and the BJP, with the support of a section of the media about the non-Congress, the non-BJP combination also caused damage, while the Congress succeeded in mobilising minority votes in its favour.

Kerala situation

As for Kerala, it said differences with parties in the Left Democratic Front was the main reason behind the defeat with both the government and the Front failing to propagate achievements among the people.

The AIFB identified confusion over industrialisation, land acquisition and “high handedness and over dependence on bureaucracy” by the Left leaders, as factors behind the defeat of the Left Front in West Bengal. “Unfortunate happenings in Nandigram also affected the image of the Left Front and its government,” the statement said.
