AITUC condemns attack on Prof. Panikkar

NEW DELHI: The All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has condemned the attack on Prof. Shivaji Pannikkar of Maharaja Shivaji Rao University at Baroda allegedly by Sangh Parivar activists on Friday.

The philosophy of “cultural nationalism” was being imposed to gag the voice of those who believed that the diversity and plural culture was our national asset as well as our strength, an AITUC statement on Saturday said.

It called upon the civil society to resist the fascist forces and urge the National Integration Council to act immediately to ensure freedom of expression.

Prof. Pannikkar had opposed vandalism on the University campus during an exhibition on May 9. He had lodged a complaint against Niraj Jain, BJP MLA, and his men who reportedly went on the rampage. Prof. Pannikkar, Dean of Arts Faculty, was subsequently suspended.
