5 lakh names added to sex offenders database

According to NCRB data, 38,947 rape cases were registered in 2016

Maharashtra reported the third highest number of rape cases in the country in 2016, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) statistics. The State reported 4,189 rape cases, following Uttar Pradesh with 4,816 cases and Madhya Pradesh, which reported the highest number of rape cases at 4,882.

Meanwhile officials from the Home Ministry said on Sunday that names of more than five lakh sex offenders, who were convicted for crimes against women, have been added to a database which can be accessed by law enforcement agencies to help crack sex crimes across the country.

The national registry of sex offenders, maintained by the NCRB, has a database of offenders convicted under charges of rape, gang rape, POCSO and eve teasing.

“As of now, we have uploaded details of over five lakh sex offenders,” a senior Home Ministry official said. Details such as photos and IDs in the registry, however, will be accessible only to law enforcement agencies.

According to the NCRB, 38,947 rape cases were registered in 2016, as against 34,651 in 2015. Overall crimes against women rose from 3,29,243 in 2015 to 3,38,954 in 2016. The NCRB reports on crimes in 2017 and 2018 are yet to be published.

A majority of cases in 2016 categorised as crimes against women were reported under cruelty by husband or his relatives (32.6%), followed by assault on woman with intent to outrage her modesty (25%), kidnapping and abduction of women (19%), and rape (11.5%).
