14 killed in Assam attacks

Guwahati: Fourteen people were killed and seven injured in separate incidents of encounter and militant attacks on civilians and goods trains in central Assam’s Karbi Anglong hills district and the adjoining North Cachar Hills district on Tuesday. Suspected militants also set ablaze ten houses in a Zeme Naga village in the district.

Those killed included six militants and eight civilians and the injured were five railway staff and two security personnel.

Suspected militants gunned down four Dimasa tribals at Niram Bungalow under Mahur police station. The militants stopped a commercial vehicle in which they were travelling and asked them to disembark and fired at them from point-blank range killing the four on the spot. . The incident sparked off an angry protest by residents of nearby villages who gheraoed the police station and vandalised it.

In another incident, suspected militants gunned down four people, including two minor girls, in Diphu on Tuesday evening. .

In a separate incident, six militants of National Democratic Front of Boroland were killed in an encounter with army troops near Donghap village.
