12 killed in heavy rain in U.P.

Twelve persons were killed and crops damaged in heavy rain, accompanied by gusty winds, in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. Lightning caused nine deaths, including those of Ankush and Ajay, both 18, at Puresewika Majra in Rae Bareli district, and an eight-year-old girl and Shanti Devi, 55, at Shahgarh in Amethi. An eight-year-old girl has been admitted to hospital.

A police spokesman said Anupama and Komal, who worked in a brick kiln, were killed and seven injured at Paharhpur village in Pratapgarh district. A 65-year-old woman was killed in Puremayi Sultan village in Pratapgarh district and Kalpnath Rajbhar, 57, at Pakrhi Kala village in Azamgarh district.

Two persons were killed and another was injured at Para in Lucknow.

Reports said a woman and her child were killed in Allahabad when a tree fell on them. A youth was killed in a wall collapse and six persons were injured when a tin shed collapsed on them in Kunda tehsil of Pratapgarh district.
