Water released for kuruvai cultivation

THANJAVUR, JUNE 16. Water was released today from the Grand Anaicut into the Cauvery, Vennar and Grand Anaicut canal systems for kuruvai cultivation.

Unlike as in the previous years when a grand function was organised with VIPs lifting the shutters, this year it was a low- key affair. Four luskers-Mr. Veerasamy, Mr. Manickam, Mr. Balu and Mr. Sathyamurthy-lifted the shutters with PWD engineers looking on. Farmers, end users of water, also joined them in lifting the shutters in the three systems.

Mr. P. R. Meenakshi Sundaram, Superintending Engineer, PWD, Thanjavur circle, Mr. Hari Krishnan, Executive Engineer, Cauvery division, Mr. Jayaprakash, Executive Engineer, Agniyar division, Mr. Kalai Selvan, EE, Vennar division, Mr. Nadarajan, EE, Cauvery division, Mr. Asokan, Mr. Thamizh Selvan, Mr. Andrew, Mr. Sivakumar and Mr. Ilankannan-all Assistant Engineers, PWD, participated in the function.

The Collectors of Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam and Tiruchi and administrator of Karaikal region who used to participate in the function in the past were conspicuous by their absence this time.The collection of water was low as only 6,000 cusecs reached the dam. But PWD engineers said with 15,000 cusecs being released from Mettur dam from six a.m. on Friday, more water is expected in a couple of days. Today 2000 cusecs of water was released into Cauvery, another 2000 into Vennar, 1500 into Grand Anaicut canal and 500 cusecs into covering sluices.
