Vitamin A camp begins

COIMBATORE, MARCH 17 . A three-day camp organised by the Department of Public Health Services for administering Vitamin A drops to children in the age group of six months to 5 years began here today. District health officials said that the camp is being held at noon meal centres and Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS) anganwadis in the district.

Vitamin A is a must for good eyesight and growth of epithelial cell on the outer layer of the skin.

Deficiency of Vitamin A would lead to night blindness, `bitot-spots' in eye, dryness in skin, toad skin and blindness caused due to measles attack. Vitamin A drop would be administered once in six months.

In Coimbatore, it is being administered through special camps in March and September. For the current year, the camp would be held till March 19, 2005 at 2,207 centres, including the noon meal centres, primary health centres, sub-centres of PHCs, schools and anganwadis of which 183 centres are in Coimbatore city.
