Varsity staff plan dharna today

PONDICHERRY, MAY 7. The Association of non-teaching staff of Pondicherry University has planned to stage a dharna in front of Rajnivas here tomorrow to protest against the ``foisting of false cases'' by the University Vice-Chancellor, Dr. V. T. Patil, against the staff.

Mr. P. Ramalingam, general secretary of the Association, said that instead of solving the problems of the staff, the Vice- Chancellor had been aggravating the situation. He said victimisation had become the rule.

An all-party leaders' meeting would be held soon and the members would seek filing of cases against the Vice-Chancellor and the Registrar demanding damages for ``foisting false cases'' against office-bearers of the Association.

Meanwhile, the PMK founder, Dr. S. Ramadoss, has appealed to Dr. Patil to start negotiations with members of the non- teaching staff association. The PMK would not remain a passive observer of the ongoing situation, he said.

The current strike by the staff of the university had thrown into disarray the examination schedule. In case of further delay in initiating negotiations. Dr. Ramadoss said his party would mobilise people's support and launch a massive agitation.

Dr. Ramadoss said he would take up the matter with the Union Human Resources Development Minister, Mr. Murli Manohar Joshi, and the University Grants Commission Chairman to ensure that the staff's problems were attended to without delay. The PMK MPs would also take up the matter with the Prime Minister through a call attention motion.
