`Usher in New Year by helping tsunami victims'

BANGALORE, DEC. 30. The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, today appealed to the people of the State to usher in the New Year with restraint and solemnity and eschew merrymaking in view of the death of thousands of people in tsunami-affected areas.

Though it is natural for the people to rejoice over the advent of the New Year, they should make an exception this year and go to the aid of the victims of the natural calamity. They should display their sensitivity at this hour of distress of thousands of people in the tsunami-hit States and Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, had declared it a national calamity, he pointed out.

Wishing the people a happy and prosperous New Year, Mr. Dharam Singh prayed for better days for everyone.

The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, Krishna, today announced donation of one month's salary to the relief fund. An official press release said that donations to the Chief Minister's Relief Fund are exempt from income tax. The donations should be sent by crossed cheque or demand drafts.
