Trial exams on the net

WHEN THE new ever-pervading ether of the world, the Internet, makes simulation of almost any real-life situation possible on the desktop, can the examination hall be an exception?

PPP Infotech, which had created a unique dress-rehearsal of the final moments in the TNPCEE examination (engineering and medicine) hall through the Internet last year, is doing a repeat- act this year.

This year too, PPP will create a virtual examination hall on the Net. ``We are offering an opportunity to students prepare for the final battle of nerves in real time,'' says Mr. B. Srinivas, Director, PPP. The examination is available in all the three subjects and students can gain access to it at www.pppindia.com/tnpcee through passwords. The results could be obtained immediately. Students can obtain passwords from the PPP site.

Last year, more than 10,000 students participated in this trial- examination. Many of the students accessed the site through the booths. The questions have been prepared by an expert team and looks at the subjects from all possible angles.

Mr. Srinivas, who is also the president of the Internet Users Club of India (IUCI), Chennai chapter, finds this as an opportunity to promote the popular use of Internet. ``The booth operators also could use such occasions to boost the information- kiosk culture and popularise the use of Internet''.``We believe in taking the net to the people and this is one way of doing it,'' he says.
