TIRUPUR: It is official now. The water-starved Tirupur Municipality started receiving Cauvery water from Thursday evening from New Tirupur Area Development Corporation Limited (NTADCL) under the Tirupur Water Supply and Sewerage Scheme.

"We are receiving the water at the overhead tanks at Rayapuram, Poochakkadu and Avanashi Road. After the trial run, which lasted two months, NTADCL has commenced the commercial supply. Meter reading at the overhead tanks began on Thursday,'' the Municipal chairman, M. N. Palanisamy, told The Hindu .

Water to industry

The Municipality is receiving 5 million litres a day (mld) and it will be increased to 12 mld in a couple of months. NTADCL had started supply of water to dyeing and bleaching industries three months back.

Under the Rs. 1,023-crore scheme, NTADCL draws water from the confluence of the Cauvery river and the Bhavani river, 55 km away from here.

Supply schemes

It supplies water to the industry at a cost of Rs. 45 per 1,000 litres and charges Rs. 5 per 1,000 litres for the Municipality.

So far the urban body had been receiving water from the Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board under two water supply schemes from the Bhavani river near Mettupalayam.

At present, the municipality was supplying drinking water once in five days.

`Poor taste'

A section of the councillors had complained about "poor taste'' of the water being supplied by NTADCL on trial basis.

Testing carried out

"Three weeks ago the supply was suspended and we tested the water in different laboratories. All of them certified the purity of water,'' Mr. Palanisamy said.

Frequent shut down at the pumping station and bursting of pipelines during the last month forced the Municipality to supply water once in 10 days. This had put pressure on the local body to get Cauvery water at the earliest, sources said. At the southern part of Tirupur testing and inter connection works are on at the overhead tanks.

Water tanks

All the municipal water tanks in the town will receive water in a month, said Mr. Palanisamy.
