Three of a gang arrested in swift action

BANGALORE, FEB. 26. Three of the six persons who waylaid a truck and robbed its driver of Rs. 7,000 in cash on the Ring Road on Thursday afternoon were caught by the police within minutes.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (West), K.V. Sharathchandra, told The Hindu that the autorickshaw-borne men overtook the truck with Gujarat registration and stopped it near Papareddypalya in Nagarabhavi in Jnana Bharati Police Station limits around 2 p.m..

The occupants of the autorickshaw picked a quarrel with the lorry driver, Vijay Singh, accusing him of dashing against their vehicle.

They pulled him out of the vehicle and assaulted him. They relieved him of the money and 10 litres of engine oil before escaping.

Mr. Sharathchandra said a passer-by had noted down the registration number of the autorickshaw and alerted the police. A message was flashed on the wireless.

Around 2.30 p.m., assistant sub-inspector Muniyappa and constable Venkataramana attached to the Kamakshipalya Police Station, spotted the autorickshaw near Sunkadakatte, he said.

The two policemen stopped it, overpowered three of the occupants and caught them, Mr. Sharathchandra said.

The Jnana Bharathi police have registered a case of dacoity.

Those caught have been handed over to the Jnana Bharathi police.

The police gave the names of the arrested as Vijay, Keshav, and Mahesh.
