SFI gheraoes Chinmaya institution director

KANNUR JUNE 26. SFI activists gheraoed the Chinmaya Institute of Technology (CIT) Director for over two hours on the campus of Chinmaya institutions at Chala near here today. In the ensuing stone-throwing by the protestors, a window pane of the Chinmaya School and a windscreen of a car were broken.

The CIT Director, Anurag Thyagi, was held hostage in the institute by a group of around 30 irate SFI workers protesting against the college management's alleged instruction to a student to remit payment seat fees even after he was transferred to the merit seat for the MCA course in the institute.

According to the protesting SFI activists, K.P. Sajayakumar, had paid Rs. 25,000 after he got admitted to the course in the payment category. The college authorities refused to return the amount excluding the semester fees of Rs. 3,000 after he had been placed under the merit category by the Technical Education Directorate.

According to college authorities, the transfer of the student from payment category to the merit category was not technically possible as the admission procedure had been completed by December 31. Mr. Sajayakumar, who ranked 1195 in the entrance examination in the State, had joined for the course in November by paying the tution fees of Rs. 25,000. The order of the Directorate transferring him to the merit category was dated January 30, the college authorities said.

The gherao ended at 12-45 p.m. following talks between SFI activists with the Chinmaya Mission secretary, K.K. Rajan.
