Sankeshwar not to retire from politics

HUBLI, JUNE 1. Vijay Sankeshwar, President of the Kannada Nadu party, who had said that he would retire from politics if his party did not do well in the Assembly election, has decided to continue with his party and in politics.

Mr. Sankeshwar told The Hindu that his supporters wanted him to lead the party. It had begun preparations for the next Assembly election, he said and added that the coalition Government in the State would not last long.

He said Kannada Nadu was not averse to having alliances with other parties for the next election. His party was ready for alliances in the interests of the State. Kannada Nadu had spoiled the chances of other parties in 60 Assembly constituencies, he claimed.

Mr. Sankeshwar said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would not be able to come to power in the State. His party was not averse to joining hands with the Janata Dal (S) in the future. The Janata Dal (S) President, H.D. Deve Gowda, had sent him feelers during the recent election for a tie-up with Kannada Nadu, he added.
