`RTA cannot stop overloaded lorries'

UDUPI, AUG. 21. The Regional Transport Officer, Omkareshwari, on Friday said the Regional Transport Authority (RTA) only had powers to impose fines on lorries overloaded with manganese ore which entered the district.

Speaking at a face-to-face programme organised by the Udupi Consumers' Forum here, she said the RTA did not have powers to stop overloaded lorries.

It was compulsory for autorickshaw drivers to install meters in their vehicles, she said and added that the people could lodge a complaint against autorickshaws plying without meters.

The RTA would take action against them if it received complaints in this regard.

Speed limit

To a question on buses in the district exceeding the speed limit, she said the State Transport Authority had set the speed limits for different vehicles, including buses.

According to the authority, express buses should cover one kilometre in 1.5 minutes while shuttle buses should take two minutes to cover the distance. City buses should take three minutes to cover one kilometre, she said.
