RSS chief's remarks on minorities flayed

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, NOV. 1. The RSS chief, Mr. K. S. Sudershan's demand that religious minorities should reinterpret their scriptures in tune with the modern world has come in for severe criticism.

The Ecumenical Dialogue Centre president, Bishop Thomas Mar Athanasius, the Bishop Paulose Mar Paulose Trust president, Prof. Ninan Koshy, and the trust secretary, Bishop Yuhanon Mor Militius, have, in a joint statement, asked the RSS chief not to set conditions or issue orders to the minorities. Members of the minority communities in India are citizens like everybody else with all the Constitutional rights and cannot be ordered about, they said. Taking strong exception to Mr. Sudershan's statement, they said the RSS chief's call to the minorities to change their leadership which had remained in the hands of conflict mongers amounted to a serious charge.

They pointed out that they had on several occasions stated that the parleys of the Church leaders with the RSS are ill-advised because the latter's position on minorities stems from its ideology and is part of a project to alter the secular character of the nation.
