Reinstate Choudhry: Court

SINGAPORE, NOV. 15

Fiji's High Court today ordered restoration of the Mahendra Chaudhry Government. The ruling was however immediately challenged by the interim administration, which said it would await the outcome of an appeal to be filed before the Court of Appeal.

Mr. Justice Anthony Gates said the interim administration headed by Mr. Laisenia Qarase was unconstitutional and that the ousted President, Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara, should recall Parliament and reinstate Mr. Chaudhry.

``The George Speight Government was unsuccessful in its attempt to overthrow the democratically-elected Government of Mahendra Chaudhry.''

In a statement, the military commander, Commodore Frank Bainimarama, said ``We do not wish to pre-empt the decision of the Court of Appeal or interfere in the judicial process and we will not engage in speculative action in the meanwhile.''
