Recruitment for Group C posts stayed

LUCKNOW, NOV. 1. The BJP's efforts to buy favour with `most dalits' and `most backwards' have received a setback with the Allahabad High Court granting a stay on recruitment of candidates against Group C posts which was currently under way.

The court directed the Government to first adjust against vacant posts those employees of the State Mineral Development Corporation who had been retrenched following closure of the State Government undertaking.

Disposing of two different petitions filed by the retrenched workers of the Corporation yesterday, the Lucknow bench of the High Court said that the Government should refer to the court's verdict passed on July 13 last directing that no fresh recruitments against Group C posts be made till the retrenched employees of the Corporation were adjusted.

On September 25, two separate petitions were filed in the High Court with reference to recruitments being made for Group C posts. The petitioners alleged that the Government had proceeded to make recruitments without giving employment to the retrenched employees of the Mineral Development Corporation.

Earlier the Government had sought six months for their adjustment on the ground that there were no vacancies existing and whenever posts fell vacant the retrenched employees would be taken in.

Counsel for the petitioners said that on July 13 the Government informed the court that there were no posts lying vacant while five weeks later advertisements were released for recruitment of candidates. The advertisements amply proved that vacancies did exist there, he added.

Disposing of the petitions, Mr. Justice U. K. Dhavan directed the Government to first comply with the court order passed on July 13 to take in the employees of the Mineral Development Corporation and then make fresh recruitments against Group C posts.
