Chaotic roads

Driving is a nightmare in Coimbatore. Readers have repeatedly drawn attention to the poor condition of roads and inadequate traffic policing. I wish to mention three additional hazards. The first is indisciplined driving by a majority of road users. The second is our penchant for planting totally unsuited plants and shrubs on roundtanas and road dividers in the name of beautification. Plants grow soon and obscure vision of drivers. Finally, there are speedbreakers that literally give a jolt to the road user. The answer lies in stricter policing, better and sustained road maintenance and serious introspection by the public.

Consumers suffer

Around one-and-a-half years back, the Assistant Engineer in-charge of TNEB distribution office, Kovaipudur, retired and so far no one has been permanently posted in the place. For sometime, one AE was posted on deputation. The office is now run by the staff. The AE attached to Selvapuram office is overseeing the Kovaipudur office. Consequently for getting new service connections, transfer of ownership of service connection etc., papers have to go to Selvapuram office for signature of AE, which causes delay and hardship to consumers. Even in case of breakdown of transformers, it has to be reported to Selvapuram AE for carrying out repairs.

The matter was brought to the notice of the chairman of TNEB by many consumers but nothing has been done so far. The CE of Coimbatore (South), under whose jurisdiction the Kovaipudur office falls, is requested to look into this.

Step up vigil

I reside in a newly-built colony of 15 independent houses in K.K. Pudur on Kovil Medu Road, which falls under Kavundampalayam Municipality. We have our own association and security guards round the clock. During the last two months, there were thefts in at least four houses. The main items stolen were cameras and cellphones. We met the police officers of Saibaba Colony and Kavundampalayam Police Stations and gave representations for more police patrolling in K.K.Pudur. But no response so far.

Work incomplete

I wish to bring to the notice of Divisional Engineer, National Highway, Coimbatore, the unfinished work on median on Avinashi Road between Sri Renga Vilas Mills bridge and PSG College of Technology. There is a long dangerous opening on the road, which may cause accidents on both sides. I request the DE, Highways to complete the median work on a war-footing.
