`Quality of education must improve'

MANGALORE Nov. 13 . The Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmastala, D. Veerendra Heggade, has stressed the need for a system of education that will be more practical. He was speaking after inaugurating the Radhabai P.V. Shet Kala Auditorium at the Sarojini Madhusudan Kushe Educational Trust here on Wednesday.

Dr. Heggade said several experiments had been conducted to improve the quality of education. A good atmosphere should be created in schools for the development of children, he said.

Education should ensure the overall development of the child and enable him/her to meet the challenges of the changing times.

The present social structure and family values did not help create the healthy environment necessary for the overall development of children.

There was a gradual deterioration of values in society today, and something should be done to improve the situation, Dr. Heggade said.

The seer of the Udupi Pejawar Math, Vishwesha Tirtha, blessed the occasion. The Transport Minister, B. Ramanath Rai, unveiled the portrait of Radhabai and P.V. Shet.

The seer said institutions should not aim at providing a system of education which would merely enable students to read and write, but it should help instil values in them.

The former Chairman of the Syndicate Bank and Registrar of the Academy of General Education, Manipal, K.K. Pai, the Mangalore Mayor, Shashidar Hegde, the Mangalore MLA, N. Yogish Bhat, and the Ullal MLA, U.T. Fareed, were present.
