P.T. Usha conferred honorary doctorate

KOZHIKODE, NOV. 1. India's finest track and field athlete ever, P.T. Usha, has been conferred a honorary doctorate by the Kannur University. ``I am delighted with this honour,'' Usha told The Hindu here on Thursday. ``I think I am the first sportsperson to be awarded a doctorate by an Indian university, so I feel very happy and proud,'' she said.

Though Usha was a student of the University of Calicut (from which the Kannur University was formed), the turning point of her illustrious career on the track had come at Kannur, when she joined the first batch of the Sports Division School, where she had met her mentor, O.M. Nambiar.

``So in a way, it's only appropriate that the Kannur University honoured her,'' said Usha's husband V. Sreenivasan, who is busy these days with their dream project, the Usha School of Athletics.
