BANGALORE: As many as 21 pro-Kannada organisations have decided to launch a Statewide agitation from July 14 demanding that the regional language or the mother tongue should be the medium of instruction from standards one to seven.

The president of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Chandrashekar Patil, in a press release here on Saturday said a meeting of all pro-Kannada organisations convened by the parishat on Friday discussed a range of issues pertaining to the medium of instruction.

It demanded that the Government declare that the medium of instruction will be the mother tongue or the regional language from standards one to seven, as well as in pre-primary classes, from this academic year.

The meeting also wanted the Government to take measures to vacate the stay given by the Karnataka High Court on the ruling of the Supreme Court.

It said English should be taught as an optional subject up to standard three and as a regular subject from standard five onwards.

The organisations that participated in the meeting were Kannada Sangharsh Samiti, Kannada Janashakti, Kannada Anushtana Mandali, KSRTC Central Kannada Action Committee, Karnataka Catholic Christians' Kannada Sangha, Mahammadeeyara Kannada Balaga, Swabhimani Karnataka Vedike, 505 Land Army Workshop Kannada Sahitya Mathu Samskritika Vedike, Kannada Vedike, Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, Karunada Sene, E-Kavi Vedike, Kannada Karmika Sanghatanegala Okkuta and Bhasha Alpasankhyatara Samyukta Kannada Sangha.
