Police bust fake currency racket, one held

MANGALORE, JULY 24. The Subramanya Police have busted a fake currency note racket at Guthigaru in their limits and arrested one person in this connection. They are on the lookout for another person said to be involved in the racket.

The police gave the name of the arrested as Mulliya Thimappayya, a leading businessman and a former Mandal Pradhan. They are on the lookout for his son, Prashanth.

The police said Prashanth obtained a loan of Rs. 20,000 from Sathyashankar on Wednesday. He returned the amount in the denominations of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500, all of which turned out to be fake, according to the police.

Likewise, Mr. Thimmappaya had returned a loan of Rs. 50,000 obtained from a local rubber growers' society. Of this, 34 notes of the denomination of Rs. 1,000 and 27 notes of the denomination of Rs. 500 turned out to be fake, they added. Investigation is on.

An unidentified man aged about 35 years died when a speeding bus hit him near the New Mangalore Port main gate late on Friday.

The police said the victim died of severe head injuries at the Government Wenlock Hospital. The Panambur Police are investigating.


A Maruti car parked in the compound of a house in the Bajpe Police Station limits was reportedly stolen on Friday night. The police have registered a case based on a complaint from Nazeem.


The Mulki Police raided a house at Sagu village near Thokkur on Saturday and recovered various items used in the manufacture of illicit liquor. The main accused, Sadashiva, and others are at large.

The value of the seizure has not been ascertained. Investigation is on.


A youth reportedly molested a schoolgirl in the Mangalore Rural Police Station limits on Saturday and threatened her with dire consequences if she reported the incident to any one.

The police have registered a case against the accused, Sunil, based on a complaint from the father of the girl.


Mohammed Hanief and Abdul Rahim, who were travelling on a motorcycle, were injured when they were reportedly hit by a bus near Ramakrishna High School, Arekal, in the Konaje Police Station limits on Friday night.
