Plea to delimit constituencies

PONDICHERRY, NOV. 15. Mr. C. Narayanaswamy, president of Sinthanai Sirpi Singaravelar Narpani Mandram here, has requested the Chief Election Commissioner. Dr. M. S. Gill, to effect delimitation of Assembly constituencies in Pondicherry and Karaikal regions so that there could be coastal constituencies to benefit fishermen.

In his letter to the CEC (copy of which was distributed to mediaperons recently) he said that the fishermen community did not have sufficient representatives in the Territorial Assembly. There had been sustained demand by the Mandram to the Election Commission seeking delimitation of the segments in the Union Territory to ensure coastal constituencies for getting adequate representation for fishermen.

Mr. Narayanaswamy has suggested to the CEC that in Pondicherry, Kalapet, Muthialpet, Ariankuppam and Moorthikuppam could be culled out and formed as Assembly segments in Pondicherry region while Kottuchery and Neravy could be formed as constituencies to ensure representation for the fishermen.

If the delimitation could not be done immediately before the forthcoming polls, certain constituencies could be earmarked exclusively for fishermen, he suggested.
