Paying a price for following rules

IF THE Ulsoor Citizens' Forum is to be believed, the high charges of police verification for getting jobs or certificates is because the Home Department is using techniques adopted by Scotland Yard, no less. However, the Government has refuted any such move.

Those who protested about it near the Mahatma Gandhi statue on Monday were especially bitter that each time they needed police verification they had to shell out Rs. 6,000 while it used to cost only Rs. 50 earlier.

The police say that it is a "first time fee" and subsequent certification costs only Rs. 3,000 each time.

But that seems like quite a big price to pay for being a law-abiding citizen.
