Parliament nod for Divorce Bill

NEW DELHI, AUG. 30. Parliament today approved the Indian Divorce (Amendment) Bill, 2000 to give Christian women right to seek marriage annulment by removing gender bias with the Lok Sabha passing it. The Bill also removes the clause of payment of either one-fifth or one-third in alimony ceiling and leaves it to the discretion of the district court to fix the quantum of maintenance.

Replying to the discussion, the Law Minister, Mr. Arun Jaitley, said the Bill was brought after a wide-ranging dialogue among the Government, the Parliamentary Standing Committee, the Bishops Conference of India and the National Council of Churches.
