One lakh Kannada books to be posted on the Web

BANGALORE: The Department of Public Libraries has decided to digitalise one lakh Kannada books and post them on the Web to enable Kannadigas across the world to access and read the full text of books.

Deputy Chief Minister M.P. Prakash inaugurated the digitisation of Kannada books programme at the City Central Library (West) at Hampinagar (R.P.C. Layout) here on Saturday. He said Karnataka is the first State to undertake digitalisation of textbooks.

The digitalisation of one lakh Kannada books was taken up under the universal Digital Library Project of Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, U.S., with the support of the Centre. The Government is implementing the project as part of the Suvarna Karnataka programme and it has decided to release Rs. 20 lakhs for the purpose.

Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh inaugurated a programme of providing libraries at learning centres located in slums in Bangalore. Minister for Primary and Secondary Education R. Ramalinga Reddy laid foundation stones of buildings for public libraries on the premises of 10 government schools in the Binnypet constituency.
