New taxiway at Bangalore airport

BANGALORE, SEPT. 2. A new 1.4-km-long taxiway for all types of aircraft was inaugurated at Bangalore airport here by the Managing Director of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Mr. Behari Lal. Coinciding with the inauguration, Flight IA-803 to Kochi was flagged off from the taxiway on Thursday.

The track, part of the apron and perimeter taxi track built by HAL with State Government funding, is expected to reduce runway occupancy and expedite flow of traffic, enabling the airport to handle 20 flights per hour. "It is estimated that due to commissioning of the new track, there will be a saving to the tune of Rs. 5 crores per annum for the operating airlines," an HAL release said.

Bangalore airport currently handles the most traffic in the country after Mumbai and Delhi.
