Name alternative candidate, Chidambaram tells Jayalalitha

TIRUNELVELI, APRIL. 29. The TMC Democratic Forum leader, Mr. P. Chidambaram, today said the AIADMK supremo Ms. Jayalalitha should come out with the name of an alternative candidate for Chief Minister immediately, if she had any respect and regard for democracy and democratic norms.

Speaking at an election meeting at Kadayanallur, a Muslim- dominated town, and also at Tenkasi, Mr. Chidambaram said the chances of Ms. Jayalalitha becoming Chief Minister were totally ruled out after her nominations had been rejected outright in all four constituencies, where she filed papers.

Mr. Chidambaram came down heavily on the AIADMK and its alliance partners for calling their front secular and the DMK combine a communal front. The so-called secular front was led by the AIADMK which openly supported kar seva at Ayodhya. The AIADMK had given representation to only two Muslims apart from allotting a lone seat to one of its constituents, while the DMK front has nominated nine Muslim candidates. Calling the AIADMK front a secular alliance was a poll gimmick meant, to fool the people.

Mr. Chidambaram introduced Mr. V. Karuppasamy Pandian, DMK candidate for Tenkasi and Mr.P.M. Shahul, Muslim Aikkia Jamauth candidate for Kadayanallur. Mr.K. Ravi Arunan, the sitting MLA of Tenkasi who recently quit the TMC to join the BJP, and Mr.K. Lakshmikanthan Bharathy, retired IAS officer addressed the meeting.
