Most people in high places lack values: Saldanha

MANGALORE DEC. 7 . There is a need for the dedicated band of people with values, conviction, and courage to stand up to certain principles, and the youth can take the lead in this regard, the Judge of State High Court, M.F. Saldanha, has said. He has noted that this is more necessary given the degeneration of values in society.

Distributing the degree certificates at the graduation ceremony of the batch of 1997 at the A.B. Shetty Memorial Institute of Dental Sciences at Deralakatte near here on Friday, Mr. Justice Saldanha regretted that most occupying high positions in society lacked these qualities. He said it required a great deal of moral courage to stand up to what was right.

He said "dharma"' was the answer to deal with people who viewed everything on purely commercial consideration with mercenary like zeal. He pointed out that this would also require for people to have principles in life and a definite set of value systems to boot. Such commitment could come from the youth who were yet to be corrupted in the worldly ways, he said.

Mr. Justice Saldanha said students should be dedicated to the profession of their choice. He advised them to meet their professional commitments with a conscience about them and work steadfastly in upholding these values till the end of their professional lives.

He also called upon the students to constantly update their knowledge. Noting that there was no end to education and the graduation was merely the end of their formal classroom training, he said life in professional world required constant updating. This could be achieved only by being close with source of knowledge. Referring to the social service taken up by the institution, Mr. Justice Saldanha noted that it was an ideal way to develop a sense of bonding with the population around. It also helped them get a first hand knowledge of the grassroot level problems from the people themselves, and this helped them gain a better perspective of the future.

The District and Sessions Court Judge, B.S. Indrakala, gave away the merit certificates. The Head of the Department of Endodontics and Conservative Dentistry, B. Sureshchandra, welcomed the gathering. The Head of the Department of Orthodontics, Krishna Nayak, administered the oath to the graduates and postgraduates. The Dean, N. Sridhar Shetty, was present. Nithin Nirmal proposed a vote of thanks.
