Moopanar death causes a void: Rajani Rai

PONDICHERRY, AUG. 30. The Lieutenant Governor, Dr. Rajani Rai, Chief Minister Mr. P. Shanmugham, his Cabinet colleagues and leaders of political parties in Pondicherry on Thursday expressed their grief over the death of the TMC founder-leader Mr. G. K. Moopanar. A Cooperation Department function was cancelled as soon as news of the death reached here.

In her condolence message the Lt. Governor recalled the `dedicated services' of Mr. Moopanar to all sections. She said his passing away had caused a void in the nation's political arena, particularly in Tamil Nadu. Mr. Moopanar was always keen on upholding the democratic traditions of a very high order, she said.Dr. Rajani Rai conveyed her condolence to the bereaved family on behalf of the Pondicherry Government and the people.

The Chief Minister, Mr. Shanmugham recalled the selfless services of Mr. Moopanar and his distinct record in serving the people. He was regarded by the leaders of all parties and was close to Kamaraj, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. He had striven to ensure good government both at Centre and in the State.

The Educational Minister, Mr. A. V. Subramanian, the Social Welfare Minister, Mr. A. Kasilingam, the PWD Minister, Mr. N. Rangaswamy, the DMK legislature party leader, Mr. R. V. Janakiraman, the PMC leader Mr. K. Lakshminarayana, the Pondicherry TMC president, Mr. V. Balaji and a host of others expressed their grief.The PMC announced a week-long mourning. The TMC flag flew at half mast, and floral homage was paid to the leader at the office of the PMC, Congress and the TMC here.
