Measures to protect water sources discussed

PONDICHERRY, JULY 6. The PWD Minister of Pondicherry, Mr. N. Rangaswamy held discussions with the officials of different departments recently to evolve an action plan to ensure that water sources in Pondicherry were protected. A communication from the office of the Minister said that it was noticed that there had been decline in the water level during the last ten years in Pondicherry. Lake and tank beds were either encroached upon causing decline in the extent of water sources for posterity.

Mr. Rangaswamy felt that to prevent water scarcity in Pondicherry as had been seen in other places appropriate legislative measures should be framed in Pondicherry.

To prevent intrusion of sea water steps should also be taken, he urged the officers of PWD, Agriculture, Science and Technology Departments and also the PASIC.

He called upon the Departments of Agriculture and Science Technology and Environment function in concert and identify the industries causing pollution of sub soil water in the union territory.

To start with the Kanaganeri and Olandai and Murugampakkam lakes would be taken up for desilting of the lake beds for storage of water permanently. Non-Government organisations would also be associated with the projects.
