McEnroe captures 10th title of season

RALEIGH (U.S.), MAY 8. John McEnroe defeated Mats Wilander 6-1, 6-4 before a capacity crowd at the BTI Champions senior tennis tournament at the Raleigh Racquet Club on Sunday. The win marked McEnroe's 10th senior tour title in the 1999-2000 season and solidifies his spot at the top of the LastMinuteTravel.com Masters Point Standings.

McEnroe breezed past Wilander in the first set 6-1. Despite the heat, both players battled for 1 hour, 20 minutes in their first senior tour final in Raleigh. The Swede jumped out early in the second set to go up 4-2 but could not hold on as McEnroe won four straight games to seal the match and claim

his first-ever BTI Champions title.

``I was hitting the ball extremely well and my serve got me out of trouble,'' said the U.S. Davis Cup captain. ``In the second, Mats' level picked up and I wasn't far from losing that set. The difference today was I served better and won more points off my serve.''

``John is playing great and I want to congratulate him on his play today,'' said Wilander, who finished the season ranked second behind McEnroe in the senior tour's LastMinuteTravel.com Masters Point Standings. ``I was pleased

with the way I played in the second set. It might have been as good as I've played lately.''
