'Lift curbs on Amarnath pilgrims'

NEW DELHI, JUNE 16. The Shiv Sena today condemned compulsory registration of names of Amarnath pilgrims with the authorities at Delhi and restricting their number to one lakh.

``Any restriction on the number of yatris and their camps in the name of security after people have reached Delhi from various States is not rational,'' Shiv Sena's Delhi unit president, Mr. Jai Bhagwan Goel, said while addressing party workers who held a demonstration here in protest against the restrictions. ``How can Central and Jammu and Kashmir Governments decide who should visit the shrine and who should not,'' he asked.

Mr. Goel said his party had sent a memorandum to the President, Mr. K.R. Narayanan, demanding immediate removal of the restrictions. He wanted the Government to provide special flights and trains for the pilgrims to reach Jammu from various parts of the country. Representations had been sent to the Prime Minister and the Home, Railway and Civil Aviation Ministers.
