Letter reveals Cong., ULFA nexus: Mahanta

The Assam Chief Minister, Mr. P.K. Mahanta, today told the Assembly that a letter confiscated recently from a top ULFA leader revealed a nexus between the Congress (I) and the banned militant outfit.

In a statement, Mr. Mahanta said the letter seized from a top ULFA leader, Aditya Chaliha, said the Congress (I) had promised to pay Rs. 50 lakhs to the ULFA during the last elections and in return the militants would not target the Congress (I) candidates.

Expressing concern at the increasing ISI activities in the State, he said 35 militants from the Bhutan hills had entered Barpeta in lower Assam today. The statement was made after Congress (I) members were marshalled out of the Assembly for creating unruly scenes in the House.
