Leopard falls into tank

UDHAGAMANDALAM, MAY 20. A leopard had fallen into a water tank at a tea plantation at Nelliyalam, about 30 km from Gudalur.

Even as a team of officials had rushed to the spot, the news spread and a large number of persons thronged the spot. The water in the tank was drained out and the carnivore was given some meat. Since the animal had continued to show signs of fatigue, it was tranquilized and taken to the Mudumalai Wild Life Sanctuary and kept for observation.

It would be set free once it regained its strength, it was stated. According to residents of Nelliyalam and surroundings, leopards straying into their areas were not a rare occurrence. A few years ago, a couple of leopards caught near Nelliyalam had been shifted to the Vandaloor Zoological Park near Chennai.
