Left Front wins Bidhannagar municipal polls

CALCUTTA, JULY 12. The ruling Left Front in West Bengal today salvaged its prestige in neighbouring Salt Lake by winning the Chairman's election in Bidhannagar Municipal Board by a margin of 12-11. The front retained the present incumbent, Mr Dilip Gupta, as Chairman.

The board went to the polls on June 25 along with the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC). The Trinamool-Congress combine had captured the CMC from the Left Front after a gap of 15 years, pulling off a major political upset.

Thousands of TC-BJP and CPI(M) supporters were waiting outside the board office amidst tight security in apprehension of violence. Mr. Gupta later took the oath of office and secrecy.
