Left delegation meets President

NEW DELHI, SEPT. 2. A delegation of CPI(M) and CPI leaders met the President, Mr. K.R. Narayanan, here today and gave him its version of the events leading to the police firing in Hyderabad on August 28 during a demonstration against the power tariff rise. Two demonstrators were killed and several injured in the firing.

They told the President that the firing was ``unprovoked'' and the State Government's version was a ``fabrication''. ``We told him that demonstrators, belonging to nine Left parties, were cordoned off and subjected to lathi- charge, teargassing, water cannon assault and attacks by mounted police and, finally, became victims of unprovoked firing'', they said after the meeting.

The delegation comprised the CPI(M) politburo members Mr. Sitaram Yechury, Mr. E. Balanandan and Mr. R. Umanath; and Mr A.B. Bardhan and Mr. D. Raja (CPI).

They said the idea was to apprise the President of ``facts'' and the ``true picture in the face of a calculated propaganda of disinformation'' by the State Government. They impressed upon the President that the State Government's refusal to order a judicial inquiry indicated that it had ``much to hide''.
