Lawyers launch indefinite strike in Chidambaram

CUDDALORE, JULY 12. Seventyfive lawyers launched an indefinite strike in Chidambaram from today in protest against the alleged assault on a lawyer by police.

An emergency meeting of the Bar Association, held in Chidambaram today, adopted a resolution, constituting an eight- member action committee, led by the association president, Mr. Manthiri, to decide on further course of action.

According to Mr. M. S. Senthilkumar, an advocate, who was allegedly assaulted, a group of police personnel, without prior permission, searched the premises where a few advocates were staying. The search continued in a van in which some advocates were proceeding to Cuddalore to meet the district judge in connection with a function to be held in Kattumannarkoil.

The resolution demanded the suspension of seven police personnel, including the Chidambaram Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr. Maheswar Dayal Sharma, taluk inspector, Mr. Rajadurai and a writer and four constables.

The resolution said that the lawyers would boycott the function to be held in Kattumannarkoil (where a district munsif court is to be inaugurated on Sunday by the acting Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, Mr. Justice N. K. Jain), if the district administration and the Superintendent of Police failed to concede their demand.

The action committee filed a private complaint with the Chidambaram court today.Advocates in Cuddalore boycotted courts today protesting against the police assault.
