Krishna waters: PM promises to safeguard State's interests

BANGALORE: The Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, informed the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday that the Prime Minister, Manmohan Singh, has assured him that Karnataka's interests will be safeguarded when it comes to sharing of Krishna waters.

Intervening during the question hour, Mr. Dharam Singh said the Prime Minister, according to a letter the State Government has received from the Centre, has directed the Union Water Resources Ministry to look into the issues raised by Karnataka. The Chief Minister asked the Opposition not to worry as the Government is taking steps to protect the interests of the State.

The Chief Minister intervened when Jagadish Shettar (BJP) was trying to seek an answer on the Government's efforts in utilising Krishna waters. The Minister for Water Resources, M. Mallikarjuna Kharge, requested Mr. Shettar not to press for an answer to his question on utilisation of waters as any disclosure of facts will harm the interest of the State.
