Karur municipal chief quits MDMK

KARUR, JULY 12. The Chairman of the Karur Municipal Council, Mr. K. R. Tamilarsan (MDMK), has resigned from the primary membership of the party as he was, ``unable to effectively discharge his duties as the local body chairman ever since his party entered into an alliance with the DMK.''

Announcing his decision through a Press statement issued here today, Mr. Tamilarasan said he had already faxed his resignation to the party general secretary, Mr. Vaiko.

Mr. Tamilarasan accused Mr. Vaiko of concentrating only on national politics neglecting the aspirations of the party cadres.

Though Mr. Vaiko had opposed both the AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalitha and the DMK chief, Mr. M. Karunanidhi, he joined hands with them at different points of time only to promote his own personal political interests, Mr. Tamilarasan alleged.

Mr. Vaiko reprimanded him when he had announced a fast unto death agitation last month, to draw the attention of the Karur district administration towards various local issues, stating that the agitation would be construed as against the Government, Mr. Tamilarasan claimed. He had subsequently given up the agitation plan.

The DMK has failed to initiate proper action against the municipal officials who were responsible for committing irregularities in the property tax revision in Karur Municipality, he added.

Under these circumstances, he was not in a position to discharge his duties ``effectively and honestly'' as Chairman of the Municipal Council by continuing in his party, Mr. Tamilarsan said. However, he continues to be Chairman of the Karur Municipality.
