Intermittent power supply in many areas today, tomorrow

Special Correspondent

BANGALORE: For three weeks, people in the city have suffered what the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (BESCOM) calls as "unscheduled load shedding".

The problem has been acute in areas served by the HSR Layout Receiving Station. Since these areas range all the way from Audugodi to Madiwala and Victoria Layout, power outage has affected a few lakhs of households and commercial establishments.

From Thursday, there will be load shedding again for two days at least because of a faulty power transformer being replaced in HSR Layout.

According to the BESCOM engineers, not more than 10 per cent of the 51 power substations in the metropolitan area have been affected and the power shutdown does not last for more than one or two hours at a time. They said the 100 mVA transformer will be replaced and will become fully functional before this weekend.

To carry out some of these works, power has to be switched off. Restoring power supply again may take some hours. BESCOM engineers say they cannot carry out these works at night because the maintenance crew do not work on night shifts. "Only emergency power outages or breakdown are attended to during the night," the engineers said.

It is not possible for the power utility to transfer the load to another line as has been the case in HSR Layout.

On Thursday and Friday several areas will be affected by unscheduled load shedding, between 6 p.m. and 5 p.m. at unspecified times.

Under Audugodi station, the areas affected will include Central Silk Board, Wilson Garden, parts of Koramangala, Hosur Road, NIMHANS and K.H. Road. Under BMTC station, the areas affected will include Subbiah Circle, Wipro, Shantinagar and surroundings. Most of HSR Layout will be without power intermittently.

In the Austin Town sub-station area, J.C. Road, New Mission Road, Lalbagh Road, Domlur, Vittal Mallya Road, parts of Richmond Road and Residency Road, Cambridge Layout and Victoria Layout will be without power at various times on these two days.

Shivanagar

BESCOM has announced that there will no power supply from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday in Shivanagar, Manjunatha Nagar, Industrial Town, Agrahara Dasarahalli and surrounding areas.
