Govt. urged to protect interests of farmers

UDUPI, JULY 24. The district unit of the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh on Saturday held a protest demonstration urging the Government to protect the interests of the farmers.

Ravindra Gujjarbettu, secretary of the sangh, urged the Government to increase the import duty on coconuts. The coconut growers in the district had already been hit by the mite menace. This had reduced the yield of coconuts by 30 per cent to 40 per cent. The Government's move to give permission for the import of coconuts was akin to rubbing salt into the wounds of farmers, he said.

He noted that the Government had waived electricity dues after the farmers in the district paid the bills. He demanded that Mangalore Electricity Supply Company (MESCOM) adjust the amount in the electricity bills for the coming months. Srinivas Hande, Ramakrishna Sharma Bantakal, Ninjoor Padmanabha Shetty, Vitaldas Tantri, Abraham Fernandes, Srinivas Bhat Kudi, and Pandurang Nayak of the sangh were present.
