Gang of cheats nabbed in Belgaum

BELGAUM, JAN. 20. Police have nabbed a gang which has been cheating villagers in North Karnataka.

The Superintendent of Police, B.Dayanand, told presspersons here on Sunday that of the five-member gang, Gopal Bhimappa Patil of Shaganmatti, Eranna Rudrappa Koujalgi of Koldur, Mahaling Parasappa Nander of Gokak, and Basheer Ahmed Hasan Saab Peerjade of Belgaum were nabbed.

A sum of Rs. 20,000, a gold ring, fake notes, a Hero Honda motorcycle, and a mobile phone were recovered from them. The fifth accused, Huleppa Sangappa Alwad of Bendigeri, was absconding, he added.

The gang used to collect money from the villagers promising them that they would return thrice the amount of money they had received. The incident came to light when Kumar Kokra Shetty of Udupi complained to the Camp Police Station here, he said.

Mr. Dayanand said Kumar, who was running a hotel at Bailhongal, faced financial problem and happened to meet the accused, Gopal, a month ago. On learning Kumar's difficulty, Gopal offered him Rs. 50,000 if the former gave him Rs. 25,000. Kumar obtained a loan of Rs. 22,000 from a bank in Bailhongal. He was supposed to pay the amount to Gopal in Belgaum on January 9.

Kumar, who arrived in the city on that day, was taken to Globe cinema by Gopal and his accomplices. After collecting the money and a gold ring from Kumar, Gopal gave a bag to him. Kumar, who returned home, found a few bundles of paper with fake notes of 100 in denomination. Subsequently, he lodged a complaint with the Camp police, he said.
