MANIPAL: The Vice-Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), H.S. Ballal, said on Monday that small and medium industries should focus on producing quality products by utilising the best managerial talent.

He was speaking after inaugurating the small industries management programme organised by the Manipal Institute of Management and the Small Industries Development Bank of India, here.

Dr. Ballal said management programmes such as the one formulated by the institute are essential as they achieve two objectives. First, they train the unemployed youth and provide them with managerial expertise. Secondly, these skilled youth can be hired by small and medium enterprises in coastal districts, because hiring MBA graduates is difficult for these enterprises.

He said the success of the industries management programme could be gauged by the fact that 80 per cent of the students trained under it have got employment in local industries. The WTO guidelines have made it imperative for small and medium enterprises to lay emphasis on quality to compete with multinational companies, Dr. Ballal added.

K.V.M. Varambally, Director of the Institute, welcomed the gathering. Ananthapadmanabha Achar proposed a vote of thanks.
