Five killed in van-bus collision

BANGALORE, JUNE 16. Three members of a family and their two close relatives were killed on the spot and two injured when the Toyota Qualis van in which they were travelling collided with a KSRTC bus in Kudhur Police Station limits in Bangalore District on Saturday. The dead include two women and a one-year-old boy.

Police said the accident took place near the Koodlur Cross on National Highway 48 at 12.45 a.m. The family and a few close relatives were returning to Bangalore from Udupi where they had gone on a pilgrimage. The passengers in the bus, which was going to Mangalore from Bangalore, escaped unhurt.

Three of the dead have been identified as Mr. Madhusudhan, alias Madghugiri Maaji, an engineer with L & T, his wife, Dr. Poornima, and their son, Devi Krishna. They were living at Mathikere in Bangalore. Madhusudhan was driving the van. His cousin, Mr. Shashidhar Bhat, and his wife, Ms. Rathna Bhat, of Koramangala in the City are the other victims.

Bhat's son, Mr. Ananth Bhat, and Madhusudhan's mother, Ms. Shyamala N.Rao, were seriously injured in the mishap. Police said they had been admitted to a private hospital in the City. The KSRTC bus was damaged in the accident and alternative arrangements were made for the passengers to reach their destinations. Based on a complaint filed by the bus driver, the Kudhur Police have registered a case.
