MANGALORE: Assistant Commissioner, Mangalore sub-division has issued notices to 13 persons in Mangalore and Bantwal taluks to initiate externment actions against them.

The move is a follow-up of directions given by Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Subash Bharani during his visit to the city in June.

Mr. Bharani visited the city to take stock of the law and order situation following the murder of Polali Ananthu, an accused in the Jabbar murder case at Polali near here on June 7.

He had then promised that police would initiate externment proceedings against habitual law and order offenders.

He had said that the police would also be more stringent in the imposition of the provisions of the Goonda Act against criminals.

Superintendent of Police Soumendu Mukherjee said the process to extern habitual offenders from the two taluks had commenced even before Ananthu was murdered.

They have been given adequate time to reply to the notices, according to Mr. Mukherjee.

The administration is free to serve ex-parte orders against those who do not appear before the authority concerned on the designated date of hearing, he said.

Identification of more habitual offenders is underway, Mr. Mukherjee added.
