Expedite probe: Kapil

NEW DELHI, JULY 12. Cricketing icon Kapil Dev has met the Union Sports Minister, Mr. S.S. Dhindsa and requested him to expedite the probe in the alleged match-fixing scandal rocking the cricketing world.

Kapil called on Mr. Dhindsa on Tuesday evening and urged him to ask the CBI to expedite the case as it was causing agony to many a player.``We had a discussion over the entire issue and he (Dev) requested for bringing the case to logical conclusion so that players could concentrate on the game,'' Mr. Dhindsa said.

On the CBI probe into the controversy, he said the agency, which had the mandate to probe all aspects of the controversy - from questionable television contracts to lack of transparency in the BCCI to match-fixing, was moving in the right direction.

Without being specific as to when the investigations would be completed, Mr. Dhindsa expressed confidence that the CBI would be able to expose the cricketers and others involved in the scandal.

Asked whether the charges of match-fixing against players would hold good in a court of law, Mr. Dhindsa said ``once the names are out, the public will decide whether they should play for India or not. A public sentence can be worse than jail''.

Meanwhile, the CBI began re-examination of the statements made by cricket players and board officials
