Dharam Singh urged to stop child marriages

MANGALORE, JUNE 1. Magu Madhura Kalike, a non-governmental organisation, has appealed to the Chief Minister, N. Dharam Singh, to take steps to stop child marriages in the State.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, copies of which were released to the press, the organisation said that recently, a television channel had carried a report on child marriages that took place in Bellary.

The NGO appealed to the Chief Minister to initiate action against those who were encouraging child marriages. The Government should declare the marriages as null and void.

It noted that child marriages often took place during mass weddings. Hence, the Government should make it mandatory for the couple to produce proof of their age. The certificate should be attested by a taluk-level officer.
